Welcome to the fabulous year 5!
Welcome to Asia Class, Year 5. The adults in our class are Ms O’Driscoll and Ms Mitchell. This term, Year 5 have been diving into an exciting History topic: Into the Unknown! This topic explores the incredible stories of adventurers who have shaped history. From the daring voyages of Christopher Columbus to the momentous moon landing of Neil Armstrong, the children have been learning about the bravery, curiosity, and resilience required for exploration. Through engaging lessons, they have delved into the Age of Discovery and the Space Race, comparing the motivations and impacts of these pioneering journeys.
See what we have been up to!
Science Museum
A highlight of the term was our exciting visit to the Science Museum, where Year 5 had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the wonders of space exploration. This trip was a fantastic way to deepen their understanding of our topic, particularly as they learned about Neil Armstrong and the Apollo 11 mission.
The children were amazed by the full-size replica of the Eagle lunar module and were able to see real astronaut suits up close! The interactive exhibits allowed them to experience the challenges faced by astronauts, from weightlessness to the vastness of space. They also discovered how technological advancements have made space travel possible, linking closely to the Science curriculum, where they study forces, Earth and space, and the properties of materials used in space technology.
Narratives and Digital Media!
In Literacy, Year 5 have been exploring themes of prejudice and acceptance through their narrative writing, inspired by Skellig by David Almond. The children have been crafting their own stories about befriending an ostracised outsider, mirroring the heart-warming and thought-provoking themes seen in the novel.
To complement their writing, they have used their Computing skills to create digital book covers using Google Drawings. This activity not only enhanced their understanding of graphic design and visual storytelling but also linked to key strands in the Computing curriculum, such as digital content creation and design. The children experimented with layering images, selecting appropriate fonts, and considering colour psychology to ensure their covers reflected the mood and themes of their narratives.
